#jollamobile log for Sunday, 2014-01-12

tbrQuu: caveat emptor, it takes 5min for a troll to come up with a RPM that has dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/emmc in the postinstall part00:00
Quusure00:00
Elleothe COBS is mostly of interest to people wanting to work on more core mer/nemo stuff, not for app developers just wanting to compile a single app against the SDK00:00
tbrElleo: I call bullshit on that00:00
tbrElleo: sailfish is a surprisingly fast moving target and openrepos is a pile of random RPMs that may or may not be built against a current platform00:01
AL13Nhmm00:01
AL13Nthis is odd00:01
Elleotbr: far more developers are going to hit the big red deploy button in qtcreator than are going to work out how to setup build targets in COBS (something I still get wrong from time to time, with the gazillion options)00:01
AL13Ni'm charging the phone and i'm still losing % power00:02
Elleowhereas openrepos fits in to the deployment flow developers are being trained for with the official store of just uploading an rpm00:02
tbrElleo: don't get me wrong, for a 'random binary distribution' this looks like a sensible approach, for open source apps it spells disaster on many levels00:02
tbrfor those apps where sources may be available, they are likely to NOT build out of the box on a fresh SDK install00:03
tbrwhile on OBS I can just 'copypac' a package and it _will_ build00:03
AL13Ngetting pretty warmish too00:04
ElleoAL13N: htop is in mer-tools that might show you what's up00:04
tbrElleo: lots of thought and effort went into both Garage and Apps-for-Meego and BOTH use dedicated building backends00:04
AL13Nwell, i'm doing alot of serious power all at the same time00:05
tbrand as said previously, the excuse for openrepos given in their about page is invalid in case of Sailfish00:05
Venemohonestly, I don't trust openrepos00:06
*** winfriedd has quit IRC00:06
Venemoplus, as I forewarned, it is already creating a negative effect in the community00:06
tbrOBS is a whole different league, add BOSS and e.g. the AFO store mechanics and it's a whole different universe00:07
Pnuuwassup?00:07
ElleoVenemo: you have to view it as a collection of RPMs from assorted developers, and ask yourself if you trust the particular developer providing the rpm you're interested in00:07
tbrand it took me just a few minutes to rebuild a _cleanly_ structured app from github on OBS00:08
Elleoit's basically just a more organised version of what's happening on TMO with people posting alpha/beta versions of their apps in threads there00:08
Venemobasically, now that we have openrepos, people will be less motivated to upload to jolla store, that's the same issue as we had on maemo and extras-devel00:08
*** spider-mario has quit IRC00:08
Elleotbr: I'm not arguing that OBS isn't good, I'm arguing that it's not easy to get into; if it had a nice front-end that didn't you to manually setup build targets for an alarming array of similar sounding options more people might use it00:09
Venemovery-very few apps ever got into extras (not -devel or -testing), there were apps that the devs never pushed to extras...00:09
Venemoand now the same shit is happening on sailfish :(00:09
ElleoVenemo: well a big problem at the moment is that the jolla store QA policies regarding allowable APIs make it very difficult to distribute quite a few apps without packaging a ridiculous amount of libraries with an app00:09
Elleohopefully that'll open up much more in the near future00:10
tbrElleo: it was a 30min workshop at 30C3 for people to do 5 clicks and get their first package rebuilt against sailfish in their home repo, most of the time spent on creating mer accounts00:10
AL13Npowertop says 212.3% CPU usage00:10
AL13N112 wakeups00:10
Venemoopenrepos is BAD for jolla (fewer apps in store), BAD for devs (less publicity for their apps), BAD for users (no QA)00:10
*** AlmAck has quit IRC00:10
AL13N2x Timer are high00:10
Elleotbr: presumably with obvious instructions on what to click, that just aren't present in the COBS interface itself00:11
Elleoonce you've got things setup it's great, but setting up build targets the first time is confusing00:11
tbrElleo: sure, but nothing prevents jolla and the community to write that down00:11
AL13N1 Timer is using > 1000 ms/s00:11
AL13N!!!00:11
Merbot`AL13N: Error: "!!" is not a valid command.00:11
tbrand some clown will probably do a youtube video of it too00:11
Elleotbr: rather than writing that down it'd be better to just give accounts sensible defaults00:11
Elleoso you create an account and it's already configured and ready to build stuff00:12
VenemoAL13N: reboot?00:12
tbrElleo: this is not sailfish OBS, it's Mer OBS00:12
Elleorather than having to hunt down some wiki page you don't know exists00:12
*** Zotan has quit IRC00:12
AL13Nah, it might be that Volume button that keeps appearing00:12
AL13Nvolume notification, i mean00:12
*** Venemo_j has quit IRC00:12
Elleotbr: so? have a simple sailfish signup process that sets stuff up for you and an alternative advanced signup for Mer folks who want to specify something different00:13
tbrElleo: you won't arrive at OBS out of the blue, something prompts you to go there00:13
*** attah has quit IRC00:13
AL13Nbut, how can i trace this to something....00:13
tbrElleo: that allready happens, it's one click to enable sailfish while creating your home repo00:13
*** r2rien has quit IRC00:13
Elleoperhaps I created mine before that happened then00:14
AL13Nactually00:14
Elleowhen I created one it was a mess of mer/ubuntu/fedora options for targets, *none* of which are correct00:14
AL13Nhow do i reboot?00:14
Elleoand you had to go into the advanced settings and get the correct project and target from a lot of similar ones00:14
Elleoand iirc then also select you wanted the armv8el target despite it being for armv8hl00:15
Elleoif that's all been simplified now then great and I withdraw my comments ;)00:15
Elleoarmv7hl*00:15
tbrif your project is well structured and packaged, it should be very easy to get building on OBS00:16
Elleotbr: I'm not arguing about that, it's just the initial OBS setup that was always terrible00:17
tbrif you did lots of hacks and included random binaries from somewhere and whatnot, you'll have a HORRIBLE time00:17
tbrbut that's GOOD00:17
Elleoof course a well structured and packaged project is easy to build from the SDK too00:17
AL13Nso00:17
AL13Nhow do i exactly reboot this phone?00:17
*** Pnuu has quit IRC00:18
*** wickwire has quit IRC00:18
tbrElleo: sure, but it's also easy to have a "grown SDK install" with all sorts of dependencies installed and hacks applied, that builds your packages fine, but they won't build anywhere else00:18
Elleotbr: aha, I see now there's a "SailfishOS" option in the build targets setup, that's much better00:18
RaimAL13N: press the power button until the Jolla logo appears to shutdown, wait a bit until the LED is off, then turn it back on00:18
AL13Nright00:19
Elleothat never used to exist, so my arguments are just out of date ;)00:19
AL13Ni was looking in settings if it was the reset device00:19
*** Pnuu has joined #jollamobile00:19
AL13Nbut somehow i doubted that00:19
*** eijk_ has joined #jollamobile00:19
VenemoAL13N: reboot? long-press powerbutton to turn off, then do the same to turn on00:20
tbrI've seen projects that had recursive build dependencies on themselves. you basically had to rebuild the project a dozen times and tweak the build config until it built properly and completely00:20
VenemoAL13N: you can also use the terminal if that's more convenient for you00:20
AL13Nhuh00:20
AL13Ni didn't think of that00:21
tbrthe original developer never noticed, as they had "a working setup"00:21
AL13Nand while looking for powertop, i had found the poweroff command too00:21
AL13Nhuh, odd, it sorta rebooted into a charging logo thingie00:22
*** eijk has quit IRC00:22
nadrieldid yountry whatpoweroff does?00:22
AL13Nnadriel: if i did, i wouldn't have had to find the power button :-)00:22
tbrand with a device that until recently needed to be mailed in if it became unbootable...00:22
M4rtinKimho "systemctl reboot" should work (as root)00:22
AL13Npoweroff is the systemd thing00:22
nadrielwhoops unable to fingerterm while under the influence of wine.00:23
tbrsure it's damn convenient if you can just upload your RPM and be done with it00:23
AL13Nhalt actually halts, but doesn't do power off,00:23
nadrielred, 'cos white is for pussies.00:23
AL13Ntbr: actually recursive build dependencies isn't all that odd00:24
AL13Nsome languages are notorious00:24
AL13Ni remember in Mageia, when we started the fork00:24
AL13Nthat someone gave up on java and used a stack from fedora to build a basic one for us00:24
tbrAL13N: for GCC, or toolchains, sure, but for a Qt UI app, hell NO00:24
AL13Ntrue00:25
tbrOBS and BOSS enforce clean working, this feels "bad" the same way as the fairly restrictive harbour, especially if you are a messy hack00:26
AL13Nwow, booting that stuff is fast00:26
AL13Nthis smells like resume to me00:26
tbror if you just want to take someone's RPM, unpack it, hack something and redist the RPM without ever seeing the sources00:26
*** r2rien has joined #jollamobile00:27

M4rtinKyeah, knowing the Fedora packaging guidelines (~4km of wiki pages in total)00:30
M4rtinKall those hacks required for Harbour seem rather unclean00:30
__pv_what's the difference between sailfishos and sailfishos:chum on OBS?00:31
M4rtinKthe first one is the target project (?) and the other the proposed community repo from lbt ?00:31
M4rtinKjust a guess00:31
tbr__pv_: the former is a build target, the latter is a community project that can accept packages00:31
*** pvanhoof has quit IRC00:31
M4rtinKoh, you really now can select the Sailfish target from the main overview00:32
M4rtinKnever got that far with the Harmattan target in COBS :)00:33
tbrthe obvious thing to do would be to try out copypac'ing some packages and building them against sailfish00:35
tbror do minor config changes, like enable some additional codecs in those gst packages and have them rebuilt against latest sailfish00:36
tbranyway, I'm hours past my target bed time... ttfn00:36
M4rtinKwell, I've already copypaced quite a lot of packages from openSUSE00:37
