Acou_Bassflesk_: this is VERYY hit and miss but its something to consider - theres a thing called googleplaydownloader that yanks .apk files from play store and dumps them into a directory (its for linux desktop, probably windows too) so you can just sideload them00:17
Acou_Bassbut it is verrryyy hit and miss due to some of them requiring play services :P00:18
Acou_Bassthis is how i do it on my nexus 4 inside sfdroid00:18

flesk_Acou_Bass: Thanks for the tip. I'm on Linux, so that wouldn't be a problem. How "legal" is it though? I wouldn't want to use something that might be problematic legally (and morally).06:50

leszekabout sailfishx14:00
coderusshow me line where "windows is a requirement"14:01
nekronIf so flashtool for linux should work14:01
leszekcoderus: "Sailfish X is currently aimed for developers and other tech lovers with some skills. This simple means that in order to get the software running properly on your Sony device you have to be tech savvy and have a Windows PC to get through the process. "14:01
Mister_Magister"and have a Windows PC to get through the process"14:01
leszekhttps://jolla.com/sailfishx/14:01
nekronyes, but technically this is needed just to update the OEM partition blobs (and bootloader, too to use fastboot with oem part)14:02
coderusleszek: okay need to try this myself some day...14:03
coderus(for me it looks like sony requirement to ship firmware flashable with sony tool)14:04
nekronif you follow building the community port for Xperia X there is one step where you create the oem.img containing the vendor blobs from Sonys ASOP website14:04
Mister_Magistercoderus: actually this software is needed to flash oem partitions14:05
Mister_Magisternothing more14:05
Mister_Magisterone time trip14:05
coderusMister_Magister: can't see why this is not doable using fastboot14:05
Mister_Magisterbecause it's sony ¯\_(ツ)_/¯14:05
leszekfastboot does not allow writing to the oem stuff14:05
leszekrecovery can as far as I heard14:06
nekronwith old bootloader fastboot flash oem did not work (I just read this somewhere at TMO), so a requirement is to upgrade to 34.3 firmware)14:06
jakibaki@leszek yes, the recovery-way to get the partition written via recovery is even on the HADK-page: https://sailfishos.org/wiki/Sailfish_X_Build_and_Flash (search for "the linux way")14:07
nekronthat new firmware contains updated bootloader so you can flash oem partition14:07

r0kk3rzflesk_: if you want there are community builds you can flash already15:55
flesk_Maybe not ancient, but old enough that they're really hard to come by. Only web retailers sell them, and only one at that. It's at least two years old I think.15:55
flesk_stephg: Because there are much better phones in the same price range. This one isn't even water proof.15:56
flesk_r0kk3rz: Which don't require Windows at all and will let me use Google Play apps?15:57
r0kk3rzyes and no15:57
stephgflesk_: I'm sure there will be a way to flash it without Windows15:58
stephgand the Google Play story will be the same as on other Jolla devices (i.e. sideload)15:58
flesk_I'm mostly extremely disappointed in Sony. Feels like a dick move to require a proprietary platform to flash a Linux OS.15:59
r0kk3rzflesk_: https://sailfishos.org/wiki/Sailfish_X_Build_and_Flash#The_Linux_Way15:59
r0kk3rzflesk_: its not a dick move by sony at all, if you want to flash OEM partition then you need their tool that they provide16:00
r0kk3rzthat the tool is windows only is immaterial16:01
flesk_Thanks, r0kk3rz. I'll take a look at that.16:01
r0kk3rzif they really want to be dicks, they wouldnt allow for any of this :)16:01

stephg(the commercial bit)16:02
r0kk3rzyeah16:02
flesk_Well, I thought their open initiative was about more than just opening up their devices. I probably read too much into that, so that's on me.16:02
r0kk3rzflesk_: it is, they pay developers to work in the open on github for pure AOSP builds16:03
r0kk3rzthey're also paying developers to work on mainlining drivers and building open source alternatives for proprietary services16:03
r0kk3rzSony as a company is far from a saint with clean hands, but on this particular thing nobody has been better16:04

Acou_Bassquestion... if you do it the 'linux way' as outlined in that link, is that the 'official' image still (with xt9/dalvik/exchange support) or a 'community' build without those things?16:46
jakibakiAcou_Bass: the "linux way" is just for prepering a certain partition to contain the blob-partitions. It's meant for community-builds but will very likely (sledges strongly hinted at it) work with the official way.16:50

Acou_Bassit means making the VM do the USB stuff properly, and installing all the crap on windows that it needs to read phones properly... just too much effort XD plus id still have to download a .iso and install windows which takes forever16:53
jakibakiAcou_Bass: There are official virtual machines: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/. But you're still right that it's most likely easier to just do it the linux-way.16:54
