lake11hello here. I am new and trying to build sailfishos :)09:21
stephgmal-: timing is wonky all over the place when they sleep I think09:21
lake11how does cyangenmod image and sailfish image interacts with each other while installed? Where and how sailfishos gets the blobs (? ) from cyanogenos?09:23
stephglake11: they don't interact09:25
lake11then why you need a cyanogenmod image for installation of sailfishos? Or you needn't?09:26
stephgsailfish buids against the blobs for a given version of cyanogen mod09:26
stephgif you're porting to a new device, it's a good idea to put that version of CM on it so that you can verify everything works09:27

Nokius_workmal-: :(09:32

crutchcornHey guys, VERY new to Android porting. After 4.2 on this document http://releases.sailfishos.org/sfe/SailfishOS-HardwareAdaptationDevelopmentKit-1.1.1.pdf (Setting up the Mer SDK) it says that you should ensure that you are able to open a shell in the Mer SDK before moving on11:14

nh1402RSpliet: the way Sailfish is installed on to ported devices is that you build an Android rom either Cyanogenmod or an AOSP based rom, and you build a Sailfish rom that is configured to work with the low level stuff/possibly kernel  stuff of the Android rom. With Sailfish mainly using the Android kernel with some modifications and nothing else20:08
nh1402there are probably some inaccuracies there, I still haven't ported Sailfish to a device yet.20:10
RSplietokay, so I assume there's Android kernel <-> Sailfish + Android app compat layer <-> Android application20:10
*** _morphis <_morphis!~morphis@fiona.nas-admin.org> has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)20:10
RSplietnow I take it that basic 2D GUI drawing for Android applications works, but no direct rendering using stuff like EGL?20:11
nh1402RSpliet: but since there is a functional Android rom just sitting there unused when you boot into Sailfish, I've been working on a way to re-enable the Android services to get apps working. At the moment I can boot into CM from Sailfish and switch back (via SSH) and also have input working. But it's a bit unstable.20:11
nh1402effectively switching between the two compositors (the Sailfish one and the Android one)20:12
nh1402to use the different OS'20:13
RSpliethmm, okay. So the two compositors are running sort-of side by side, and you'd rather have the Android compositor drawing to a Sailfish "window" I guess?20:13
nh1402exactly20:14
nh1402but I have not the slightest idea how to do that20:14
RSpliethmm, that's going to take a bit of trickery; the question is whether you can make the Android compositor draw into a different framebuffer than the front/back buffer20:15
RSpliet(the one that's scanned out by the graphics driver)20:15
nh1402RSpliet: well I did test exactly that, you have a pre device so you may know about the Android Chroot method for Webos20:16
RSplietnh1402: I'm afraid I don't... LuneOS was only ported for the Touchpad20:17
RSplietand to the best of my knowledge, so was Cyanogenmod20:17
NokiusRSpliet: LuneOS is also running on hammerhead isn't it20:18
nh1402I tried the fb swap hack that method used, while I was in Sailfish, and started Surfaceflinger and it *Seemingly* drew to fb1,  but since I had no idea how to get that to draw to the screen I have no idea if it worked or not20:18
nh1402but after locking and then waking the phone, both compositors switched over, leaving behind a blank screen.20:18

nh1402which can be found in the second link in the init.rc file20:24
nh1402which I ran in the command line while in Sailfish20:24
RSpliethmm, oh, if the Android compositor runs in a chroot, I assume the trick is to 1) get the physical address of the SailfishOS applications viewport framebuffer, 2) associate that with an fb device inside the chroots dev/graphics/fb0, 3) start the compositor20:30
RSplietthe question is just: how do you do 2)20:31
nh1402my approach isn't using chroot, the root directory of the Android rom and the Sailfish rom is the same, so can't really do that20:31
nh1402it's more like interweaving the 2 OS' together20:32
RSplietokay... here's the trickery for WebOS/LuneOS:20:34
RSpliethttps://github.com/nizovn/AndroidChroot/blob/master/c-service/src_client_service/client.c20:34
RSplietit uses SDL to forward the Android compositors framebuffer to the WebOS card20:36
RSplietthat's one layer of indirection more that I'd hoped for, but probably good for forwarding input :-)20:38
nh1402the only issue with that is that, the version of Android it uses is the version before they overhauled the way graphics work with Android, but disabling HW overlays in the developer settings inside CM seems to get around that somewhat20:39
nh1402input works, only thing I needed to get that to work was to change the user group of eventX from video to input before starting Surfaceflinger20:39
RSplietanyway, that should be the basic approach, question is where they got the "fb1" device from (kernel simplefb?) and how did they get Android mad enough to render into that thing rather than it's default :-)20:46
nh1402RSpliet: from line 26 onwards it seems in this file, https://github.com/nizovn/android_device_hp-palm_rib/blob/gingerbread/AndroidChroot/ramdisk/init.rc20:47
r0kk3rzRSpliet: from my reading we dont have to do too much due to the wayland-hwcomposer relationship in sfos20:48
r0kk3rzwhere wayland is already using android style framebuffers20:49
RSplietnh1402: yes, but that normally runs inside the chroot, which is probably a rebind of the devices own /dev20:49
r0kk3rzbut running in chroot sounds very useful20:49
RSplietI can imagine if you remove fb0 outside your chroot you remove the FB that sailfish OS itself is rendering to20:49
nh1402RSpliet: this is way outside of my area of expertise, this project started off as an experiment, and have only learnt just enough to keep things going.20:50
RSplietnh1402: it's also a very nasty hack you're interested in, mind you :-)20:50
nh1402RSpliet: here's kind of tutorial of how to get to recreate my results, http://piratepad.net/lYkoEab7p120:52
nh1402you should be able to get a better understanding of how it works in my case.20:52
nh1402RSpliet r0kk3rz: and due to Sailfish and Android sharing the same root directory for ported devices, I don't think it'll be possible to chroot into Android with the existing rom which Sailfish is flashed over, anyway. But I've never actually successfully chrooted into anything with a GUI20:55
r0kk3rznh1402: i have a reasonable grok on what needs to be done on the graphics side of things20:55
r0kk3rzno need to worry about UI with chroot, just get it running20:55
r0kk3rzmy main question mark is the glibc/bionic relationship and possible IPC methods20:56
nh1402I haven't tried chrooted into the Android rom.20:56
r0kk3rzyeah im not super sure what needs to be done there20:57
nh1402one of krnlyng's methods was to build the android emulator image and chroot into that, which is the chroot without GUI thing I was talking about20:57
r0kk3rzyeah that could work actually20:58
nh1402but that never worked and that project is dead20:58
r0kk3rzah20:58
nh1402there was a seperate renderer invovled with that and it just printed garbage if anything at all, and due to the lack of knowledge in the area and no one helping that project was shelved indefinitely.20:59
*** electrolux is now known as electrolux_off20:59
nh1402the other thing with that compared to my idea is that method adds a second android rom to the phone, while I'm using one that's already on the phone.21:00
r0kk3rzdont worry so much about the renderer, but we need surfaceflinger to be running without actually drawing anywhere21:00
r0kk3rzwhilst lipstick is also running21:01
krnlyngr0kk3rz: https://thp.io/2014/harmattandroid/21:01
ghosalmartinnh1402: am using a phone that has both processors, so it tries to build both 64bit and 32bit binaries21:01
nh1402which works-ish but with that fb-swap hack thing21:01
nh1402but both draw to fb1 after waking the phone from sleep21:01
krnlyngr0kk3rz: thp patched gralloc so surfaceflinger draws to a file, which he then rendered using sdl21:02
krnlyngr0kk3rz: but that is glesv1 only and uses pixelflinger...21:02
r0kk3rzkrnlyng: that would be needed for harmattan, but not sfos21:02
r0kk3rzpatched surfaceflinger could be useful though, if thats the only IPC method anyone has come up with21:04
