#jollamobile log for Thursday, 2018-09-20

Nicd-akaWolf: they have said they would open up stuff for 5-6 years now, I wouldn't trust their word too much on that04:12
r0kk3rzthe future is potentially quite a long time08:02
mornfallcan anyone remind me how i install packages on sfos?11:55
coderusmornfall: click on file?11:55
coderusor ssh?11:56
coderusterminal?11:56
mornfallssh11:56
mornfallfrom repos11:56
mornfalli need telnet :p11:56
coderusdevel-su pkcon install-local $file11:56
coderusfrom repos devel-su pkcon install11:56
coderusdont forget to devel-su pkcon refersh before11:56
mornfallthanks, i couldn't remember the pkcon command name11:57
coderusit's PackageKit CONsole interface11:58
mornfallalso no telnet? :(12:00
r0kk3rzwhy telnet?12:01
mornfallbecause the email client tells me nothing and the same setup works from the laptop which is hooked in the same network12:02
mornfalland it doesn't work, obviously :p12:02
mornfalljournal is just full of connection refused, but fails to mention the address or the port12:03
r0kk3rzoh right, telnet from the device, not to it12:05
mornfallokay found it in inetutils12:05
mornfallpkcon search is crud12:05
mornfall(also pkcon docs)12:05
mornfalland of course the phone connects fine12:06
mornfallusing telnet12:06
r0kk3rzyeah, you can install zypper if you wish a more featureful cli12:06
mornfallso the snag is somwhere in the bowels of the baroque mailsync kitchen sink :(12:06
r0kk3rzpkcon is fine for basic package pulling12:06
mornfallokay this is bs :(12:09
mornfallthere was a CLI tool for managing accounts, wasn't there?12:09
mornfallag-tool, apparently12:12
*** ecloud_wfh is now known as ecloud12:20
mornfallwell, account creation clearly only works on data and not wlan ... this is f*** up :(12:52
mornfallalso IDLE is gone12:52
coderuswhat are you doin? or tryin to do?12:54
mornfalladd an email account12:55
mornfallIMAP, namely12:55
mornfallwell it sort of works now, just IDLE no longer works (this worked before on the same server)12:56
mornfallbut wlan acts really weird on jolla1, tcp connections get stuck regularly12:57
mornfalli almost never connect to wlan at this point, it never worked correctly12:57
mornfallonly for updates and when downloading big(ish) stuff12:58
mornfall(after the account is created, it can sync on wlan, just the initial creation fails, it seems)12:58
mornfalli wonder how librem 5 is going... because sfos is a huge mess that's not going anywhere :(13:01
r0kk3rzyeah i wouldnt expect anything librem to be on sfos standard for like at least 6-7 years13:04
r0kk3rzi never had any issues with wifi on jphone... but its been a while since i used it13:05
*** svalx_ is now known as svalx13:34
mornfallwell if they stop development after 2 years, yeah, in 7 it'll be like sfos is today :p13:35
mornfallbitrotten to the core13:35
r0kk3rzyou seem to have a very jaded opinion of sfos13:38
mornfallcome on, the browser doesn't work, the messaging app can only do SMS by now, email barely gets by, connman is still the same pile of broken that it was 4 years ago :(13:41
mornfalli run IRC with bitlbee to get working chat (but it doesn't work on wlan), make phone calls and use the flashlight (and the alarm clock)13:42
mornfalla few android apps still work, even though they complain a lot (i guess that is a minor miracle though)13:43
r0kk3rzi really dont see purism doing any better13:43
r0kk3rzthey're mostly hoping to solve their problems through the magic of open source13:44
r0kk3rzon release their messaging app will only do SMS, not MMS13:45
mornfalli seriously considered getting the sony phone to run sfos at one point13:45
mornfallbut well13:45
mornfallMMS was a tech of the past even in 201413:46
mornfallbut the problem with sfos is that it is neither, it's not an end-user product, but it's also not a power-user OS13:47
mornfalleverything is hidden and completely undocumented (other than extracting info in painfully small and hard-to-find bits buried in TJO) :\13:47
r0kk3rzno, its a hackers os, which is fine by me13:48
SQUelcherThe missing SIP client is a major hassle for me.13:48
SQUelcher(also: VoLTE, VoWiFi)13:49
mornfallwell, you could try android apps :p but seeing that all videochat apps that i tried crash within 30 seconds on sfos, i guess something is broken somewhere13:49
r0kk3rzive successfully done voice calls through whatsapp android13:50
mornfalleven riot.im crashes :(13:50
r0kk3rzand i should plug matrix into gstreamer for webrtc voice calls too, which would be cool13:50
mornfallthere's a native matrix client?13:51
r0kk3rzyeah13:51
Nicd-I just wish a "hacker's OS" didn't have to mean most of what a regular user wants is broken in some way13:51
r0kk3rzit doesnt necessarily, but these things are usually correlated13:51
mornfallNicd-: well, i don't have a problem with ssh-ing into the phone, looking at logs, etc... but there's nothing useful, and the breakage is totally random13:52
r0kk3rzbut thats what you get for trying to make a product out of open source13:52
mornfallNicd-: the other jphone (my wife's) has a completely different set of weird behaviours from mine :(13:52
mornfalllike persistently using data no matter what you do, so while i *only* use data she can only use wlan... it's quite crazy :p13:53
Nicd-r0kk3rz: for some values of "open"13:53
mornfalli had to go as far as 'damage' the APN setting, because the phone would just randomly go and connect to data even if set to wlan-only :(13:54
SQUelcherI've got three WiFi APs in my flat. My Jolla C ends up logged into the weakest, almost every time..13:54
mornfallalso, this turns out to be totally a blast from the past, when there were more than 2 people to complain about jolla/sfos :D13:54
Teguwifi doesn't really support proper roaming from what I understand13:55
Tegucompared to cellular technologies13:55
SQUelchermornfall: Most operators nowadays ignore your APN settings and force you to the "right one".. So you could be out of luck in the future ;) (maybe set it to the MMS APN, so it is a valid, but unusable one)13:57
mornfallmaybe i'll get sony phones and put lineageos on them, or something like that... paying for sfos seems pretty crazy at this point :\ depending on how purism pans out, or whether the jphones finally kick the bucket before they start shipping14:01
r0kk3rzgrass is always greener14:06
mornfalli know for a fact that it's going to suck (in both cases), but it's barely possible to get by on sfos... (i could also return to not having a phone at all \o/)14:14
r0kk3rzyeah in many ways being an sfos user is an exercise in masochism14:14
r0kk3rzbut the alternative is something more mainstream, like an android phone, or iphone14:15
tadzikhmm, I wouldn't say it's so bad, perhaps my phone usage is different14:16
tadzikthe few moments I used android on my xperiax before flashing it were a pain to endure otoh14:16
r0kk3rzmost of that pain was just phantom muscle memory though, it feels unfamiliar and uncomfortable14:17
mornfallwell, apart from all the breakage, what mostly frustrates me that the 2 things i use most often are flashlight and ringtone on/off... those are available in completely different ways on sfos, which is just stupid14:17
mornfallambiences are a failure but nobody wants to admit that :p14:17
tadzikerm14:19
tadzikI have a flashlight on a quick action, not sure if it's stock but there's definitely an "app" for that14:19
tadzikoh, you mean different ways14:19
mornfalli agree that making the background different for silent mode is cool, but that's about where the cool ends14:20
tadzikambiances are fine for ringtone on/off if you configure them to be, they are indeed useless by default14:20
tadziksince it only brings the volume down without actually disabling the ringtone, so fuck you if you happen to accidentally press the volume up button14:20
r0kk3rzdouble tap voldown to silence is a good idea though14:21
Teguit used to be so that pressing up does not increase ringtone volume..14:22
TeguI had a patch for that at some point but after some update I did not apply it anymore14:22
Tegulazy14:22
r0kk3rzbut yeah i do not like having my deliberately silenced ambiance being overridden by vol keys14:22
SQUelcherI'm still not certain what to use if my jolla c dies..14:23
Teguyea, it's annoying when the volume keys change ringtone volume or media volume depending on the state. if I want to make sure that media volume is not super high (in case I accidentally open something), I had to open a media app and change the volume there14:23
Teguor maybe there's a slider in settings as well, not sure14:24
TeguSQUelcher: same for me with J114:24
tadzikoh, so *that*'s what it is...14:24
r0kk3rzSQUelcher: buy a sony xa2, try your luck with android, if you really hate it buy sfos14:24
SQUelcherMy wife still uses her Nokia E90 Communicator :]14:25
