pdanekHello10:55
pdanekSo10:55
pdanekAfter deciding to buy N90010:55
pdanekI thought why not to have small collection10:55
pdanekIn the past I wanted to buy some phones/PDAs but didn't10:56
pdanekNow maybe it's the time to buy them for collection10:56
Nicd-already sold my Jolla, sorry10:56
pdanekNokia E90 = cool phone? Worthy of being in the collection? Will I be still able to get apps for it?10:57

pdanekPalm TX = cool PDA? Worthy of being in the collection? Will I be still able to get apps for it?10:57
Aardit's a great pda, you should be able to find apps, but most of the commercial apps probably won't work anymore11:03
pdanekFor a collection and experiencing palm os in general (never used it before), would you rather recommend TX or Treo 680?11:03
pdanekTreo is smartphone but obviously I will no longer need 2g function11:04
Aardthe 680 doesn't have wifi, so you'll need to get internet either by 2g or through a bluetooth nap. the tx has a way bigger display, and the traditional palm input methods (which are surprisingly good)11:05
Aardas phone and organizer I loved the 680, for just playing how palmos feels the tx might be better11:06
pdanekCool, thx11:06
pdanekAard: any other not mentioned smartphones or PDAs you recommend?11:07
AardI never had the tx myself, only used it from friends. I went Vx -> treo 270 -> treo 680 -> centro11:07
Aardsiemens ic35 is an interesting piece of history11:07

pdanekAard: I found both TX and T5 for similar price12:57
pdanekWhich one should I buy?12:57
pdanekThere is wifi SD card for T512:58
*** Snoras <Snoras!~Snoras@gateway/tor-sasl/snoras> has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)13:14
Aardpdanek: tx makes more sense. also take into account that the battery will be pretty much dead, so check tutorials how to change it first13:14
pdanekAard: but T5 has faster cpu and more memory?13:15
pdanekAnd the only difference seems wifi?13:15
pdanekAnd if I can get wifi sd card13:15
Aardthe OS is pretty boring (though imo more userfriendly than symbian). it just concentrates on being a good pda - so it does great calendaring and addressbook, and everything else is optional13:16
Aardcpu doesn't really matter that much on those, they're not that useful for web browsing, and that's about the only cpu intensive task. most of the 3rd party applications you'll try out come from the palmos 3.x/4.x era where a 20mhz cpu and 8mb ram was high end13:17
*** Snoras <Snoras!~Snoras@gateway/tor-sasl/snoras> has joined #jollamobile13:19
pdanekWell13:23
pdanekI expect many apps from palm13:23
pdanekKind of Android of the past13:23
pdanekThousands of games too13:23
*** jpetrell <jpetrell!~jpetrell@62.248.209.29> has joined #jollamobile13:24
Aardyeah, but again, most of those target palmos 3.x/4.x13:24
pdanekOk13:24
pdanekAard: but still you say I should go for tx then?13:24
pdanekNot older palm?13:24
pdanekI think T5 has some magnesium kind of case13:24
pdanekWhile TX is plastic13:25
Aardit depends on what exactly you're trying to do. palmos 5.x are the ones were you have a chance to do things like playing mp3s or simple web browsing (though I'm not sure if it's still possible to get the mp3 players)13:26
pdanekAard: I think many apps were paid back then13:27
Aardthere wasn't something like an appstore around, so it was harder to make money with apps. almost all of the stuff I was using back then was freewark13:27
pdanekIsn't it possible to get all apps free nowadays from some community website?13:27
pdanekRight13:27
Aardno idea, I switched from palm to n900 when I was at nokia in 2010, and all my palmos devices have the apps still loaded13:28
Jopepalmos apps can probably be found via bittorrent these days13:28
Jopebut getting them legally may be difficult13:28
pdanekI see13:29
Aardproblem is that most paid apps are tied to a specific device, and the activation services are most likely no longer around. if it's not interesting enough to be cracked you're out of luck13:29
Aardthe freeware applications should still be easy to find13:30
Jopeah they had serial number tie-ins.. makes sense13:31
Jopelots of old symbian sw was also imei based13:31

pdanekFor Symbian, which device you recommend me to get for old phone collection?13:34
pdanekE90 or something else?13:34
Jopethat's a difficult one, symbian was rather fragmented13:37
Jopethere was a binary break for 3rd edition13:37
Jopeand then again later13:37
Jopeone of each edition really :-P13:37

pdanekHmm13:38
Aardwell, palm had a binary break between 4 and 5 as well, due to moving to a completely different architecture, but they just shipped with an emulator13:38
pdanekWhich one of each edition?13:38
pdanekI have no idea of Symbian phones13:38
pdanekIf you can list some would be terrific13:38
pdanekI want to have experience of each OS13:38
pdanekI still have Nexus 5, where I will reinstall Sailfish13:39
pdanekThen N900, Palm, some Symbians13:39
Jope1st ed probably 3660 or n-gage qd.. 2nd ed 6600 or 6630, 3rd ed something like e71 or n90 ..13:40
Jopeafter that it gets hazy13:40
JopeI really stopped giving a damn after the n900 came along13:40
Jopeno more symbaaaal for me13:40
inte[m]The pureview was auch great symbian phone13:44
AardI'm using a pureview as camera still. for running symbian it doesn't suck _that_ bad, but the camera is great13:45
inte[m]Regarding Palm, I would have loved to see the foleo being released to the market13:46

inte[m]The sony Ericsson P1i was one of the best phones i ever had13:49
Jopethe e90 is basically a 3rd edition experience like others13:49

Jopethe older communicators are s80 devices or geos devices13:49
inte[m]Symbian, too13:50
pdanekOk13:50
pdanekBut 3rd ed was still very popular with thousands of apps?13:50
pdanekOr already dying?13:50
Jopestill strong at 3rd ed13:51
Jope5th ed was a flash in the pan13:51
pdanekThere was even 5th?13:52
pdanekSo then even 4th13:52
Jopeno 4th14:01
pdanekHow does the Sony Ericsson Symbian experience compare to Nokia's?14:01
Jopeprobably because asia + fear of fours .. no idea.. nokia respected the fear of fours a lot14:01
JopeUIQ is rather different. it's all in the ui14:02
pdanekSomething like P990 looks really cool14:02
Jopeunforch I was a company man back then so I rarely looked at what the others were doing.14:02
Jopelater I found out that the old three sausages company was actually quite a lot better in smart and dumbphones than we were14:02
Jopebut such is life when you're focused on your own thang14:02
Jopeand have 42% market share.14:03

pdanekSignificant enough to get it?15:17
kimmolii wish i could resurrect my samsung i78015:17
Aardwindows ce sucks as pda, palm was years ahead of them. but makes it up in hackability and multimedia capabilities15:17
r0kk3rzpdanek: why are you creating a collection of obsolete mobile devices?15:18
*** playforvoices <playforvoices!~Thunderbi@95.91.138.6> has joined #jollamobile15:18
Aardzaurus was probably interesting for both qt and showing off that it's possible to do a linux pda. I have some of the original models15:18
Aardsome of the clamshell devices are pretty neat as well, and capable of running bsds15:19
pdanekr0kk3rz: isn't collection usually of something older or obsolete?15:19
pdanekSome people collect old cars, why?15:19
* tbr still has an compaq jornada sitting around *sigh*15:19
tbrhp jornada, sorry15:19
tbr720, the keyboard version15:20
Aardtbr: there was a snap on keyboard using the jacket interface for the ipaqs15:20
tbryeah15:20
pdanekAard: which Zaurus would you recommend me to get then? :)15:20
tbrthe two PCMCIA interfaces were nice though15:20
tbrI had a wifi card and a pcmcia hdd15:21
tbr5GB awfully expensive and slowwwww15:21

AardI still have a box full of jackets. single pcmcia with battery, dual pcmcia, gps, camera, ...15:24
inte[m]/ne had a Compaq ipaq once, with pcmcia. I also installed Linux on that15:24
inte[m]Me15:25
inte[m]Damned SwiftKey15:25

pdanekHP Ipaq H5400 or 550015:29
pdanekNokia E9015:30
pdanekNokia N90015:30
pdanekSailfish will be covered by my Nexus 515:30
pdanekAm I missing anything important apart from Zaurus?15:30
pdanekI'm probably not going too far into the past like Psion devices.... I'm too young to remember that.15:31
Aardpdanek: yep. both 5500 and 5400 are less hackable than the 3xxx models, but still accept jackets15:35
pdanekLet's say the primary reason is to get them for Windows part15:35
pdanekBtw the more times I play with Galaxy note 8 in shops, the more I realize how much I missed stylus15:37
pdanekIt's so amazing feeling to use stylus again :)15:37
pdanekMaybe Galaxy Note 9 should be my next smartphone15:38
pdanekIt will already have Linux on Galaxy probably15:38
pdanekThere are things that you can't do without stylus on smartphone15:38
pdanekLike playing RCT Classic15:39

Aardpdanek: no, there were multiple binary breaks between the various mobile windows versions. ipaq runs some old windows ce/pocket pc binaries16:18
pdanekOh right16:18
pdanekSo which Windows device should I get to cover majority?16:18
pdanekSimilarly as s60 3rd gen is most representative for symbian16:19
pdanekWhich one for Windows mobile?16:19
AardI don't think there's such a device, usually they broke it in both directions. the ipaqs were mainly popular because of the sleeve system for extensions16:20
Aardat least around me no other mobile windows platform became that popular16:20
pdanekOk16:23
pdanekAard: and regarding the Zaurus16:23
pdanekAny specific one you could recommend to get please?16:23
pdanekShould I just aim for latest model?16:23
AardI only have the first one myself, and played with newer one occasionally. they were neat, but always a bit too expensive16:27
pdanekAard: SL-5000D?16:33
